The College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS) the first medical school in Sierra Leone was founded on 12th April 1988 by the Government of Sierra Leone (GOSL) with the Nigerian Government and the World Health Organization (WHO). With the enactment and coming into effect of the 2005 University Act which lead to the creation of two Universities in Sierra Leone, COMAHS as a constituent arm of the University of Sierra Leone (USL), incorporated the National School of Nursing which is now a Faculty of Nursing and Pharmacy Technician School, also as part of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. It has four faculties: Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Nursing and Pharmaceutical Sciences. COMAHS is mandated to producing doctors, nurces, pharmacists, biomedical scientists and laboratory technicians with a view to improving the health care delivery system in Sierra Leone.

OBJECTIVES

The essential goals of the college are to produce doctors, dentists, pharmacists, nurses and medical laboratory sciences ancillary health personnel of high quality with internationally acceptable qualifications. in order to achieve this, a programme has been designed to:

Prepare doctors, pharmacists, nursing and medical laboratory scientist, dentists and other high cadre health professionals for leadership roles in the health care system who are able to work in harmony with the other allied health professionals;

Integrate training where possible, with other health care professionals with the aim of emphasizing the interdisciplinary nature of the health care delivery system;

Produce a high proportion of doctors, dentists, pharmacists, nurses and medical laboratory scientists and other health care professionals dedicated to community health care yet providing them with adequate academic background for further specialization, in teaching and research to serve the future needs of the college and other health institutions;

Produce doctors, dentists, pharmacists, nurses and medical laboratory scientists with the appreciation and willingness to participate in continuing education throughout their professional career;

Produce doctors, dentists, pharmacists, nurses and medical laboratory scientists who would observe at all times the humanitarian tenets of the respective professional oaths.
Courses taught in the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS) are designed to cover the following broad areas of study.

  1. The normal human body, mind and society,
  2. The abnormal human body, mind and society,
  3. A clinical programme designed to equip the student with the knowledge and skills required to deal with the abnormal.
  4. Primary care of both the individual and the community.
