Designed as three-year curriculum following the foundations course, the bachelor’s degree in counseling seeks to prepare counselors to further their knowledge and skills to work independently in a variety of practice settings. Counselors with the bachelor’s degree can provide primary and secondary level care to patients in the community and hospital for a variety of mental health issues, provide administrative oversight of programs, and offer consultation and supervision of counseling services delivered at the primary level.

Graduates of the Bachelor’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (Clinical Psychology) will be able to:

1. Identify evidence of mental disorders and suicide risk, substance abuse, or other harmful behaviors when people seek help for physical health problems.
2. Recognize the impact of mental disorders and suicide risk, substance abuse, or other harmful behaviors on families.
3. Provide knowledge about the symptoms and sequelae of a disorder and effective treatments to patients and their families.
4. Recognize and utilize family strengths, resilience, and resources to support patients.
5. Provide clinic-based as well as ambulatory crisis-intervention services.
6. Provide supervised medication and support to individuals with chronic, stable mental disorders by monitoring symptoms and functioning, thus reducing relapses and helping to improve long-term outcomes.
7. Determine and make proper referrals to tertiary mental health care for those requiring specialist interventions
8. Competently assess and diagnose common, as well as severe, mental disorders and understand the links between physical and mental disorders.
9. Administer time-limited psychotherapeutic techniques.
10. Design short-course curricula and workshops to integrate mental health education and practice into general health education and training.
11. Provide supervision and support to primary care staff delivering mental health interventions to local communities.
12. Identify and use effective advocacy strategies on behalf of those with mental disorders at the level of policy-makers, planners and government officials.
13. Understand relevant local mental health legislation and the procedures for effective implementation of legislation in clinical practice.
14. Demonstrate basic knowledge and understanding of administrative functions and procedures for operating mental health services.
15. Apply principles of formal research, including data collection, statistical analysis, and evaluation of findings.
16. Provide effective community outreach programs to prevent mental disorders and promote mental health, particularly in preventing suicide and substance abuse.
17. Apply individual strategies to address problems of stigma and discrimination faced by people in the community with mental disorders
