Admission as a freshman takes into account a number of factors. This includes specific courses you completed in high school and your grades in those courses.

Unisa general admission requirements 2022/2023
The following requirements apply to all students who are interested in pursuing a program at the University of South Africa Unisa. Depending upon what type of applicant you are, you may also have to meet additional requirements. The minimum requirements for University of South Africa Unisa admission are outlined below:
- Your admission to Unisa is dependent on you meeting the specific admission requirements for your chosen qualification. If you don’t meet these requirements, you may want to consider alternative qualifications. Visit the qualifications page for undergraduate qualifications.
- Some Unisa qualifications have limited spaces available. Meeting the general and / specific admission requirements for a qualification does not guarantee that you will be offered a space for the 2022 academic year.
I wrote matric before 2009. Do I qualify?
If you do NOT hold a Senior Certificate with an endorsement indicating that you have been exempted from the matriculation requirement, please refer to the documents below to ascertain whether or not you are eligible to apply for admission to undergraduate degree studies (not applicable to students who wrote the National Senior Certificate examinations from 2008).
Applying for credits from other higher education institutions
Unisa may recognise previous learning from previous formal education. This will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Not all credits achieved at other institutions will count towards a Unisa qualification. Your request for exemption(s) will only be considered once we have received your completed online DSAR04 form and a certified copy of an official academic record, a conduct certificate and, in some cases, the syllabus. In the case of international qualifications, SAQA evaluation and the syllabus are required. No exemptions will be finalized on an academic record during the application period.
You must meet the admission requirements for the qualification for which you are applying for credits and/or exemptions. Unisa reserves the right to grant and/or decline applications for exemptions or credit transfers.
Recognition of prior learning
When applying to Unisa, remember that Unisa will consider your previous learning. This includes both formal education at a tertiary institution (eg formal certificate, diploma and degree qualifications) and informal learning (eg knowledge or skills acquired during practical work experience, including community work in a relevant field). Admission and re-admission rules (academic progression rules)
Unisa prescribes a set of minimum standards with which students must comply to ensure their continued registration with the university. These are set out in the Admission Policy.
- Senate may decide to exclude students on the basis of poor academic performance.
- Academically excluded students may appeal to the executive dean of the relevant college.
- The maximum periods (including deferment) in which a qualification must be completed are as follows:
- 120 credits: 3 years
- 240 credits: 6 years
- 360 credits: 8 years
- 480 credits: 10 years
- The University will exclude students who do not complete a qualification within the prescribed maximum period.
- Students who are currently excluded or suspended from another institution on the grounds of misconduct will not be considered for admission.
- Senate may reduce the maximum period in which a qualification must be completed (as set out above) upon application by a college.
- Each year in which the student was registered at Unisa is included in the calculation of the period of registration, and not just the years in which the student was registered for a particular qualification.
- In the case of a student who has completed a formal degree or diploma and is registered for a second or further qualification, only those years of registration after the completion of the degree or diploma will be taken into account for purposes of calculating the study period in respect of the second or further qualification.
- Modules from which a student has been exempted will not be taken into consideration for the purposes of determining whether he or she should be re-admitted to the university. Similarly, a student’s previous academic performance at another university will not be taken into consideration.
