Higher Education Certificate (Foundation)

The current admission requirements to any higher education programme in Uganda requires at least two principal passes for degree programmes and one principal pass and two subsidiaries for a diploma programme which most of the potential students do not have.

TARGET GROUP

This programme is designed to target foreign students without A’ Level qualifications/ equivalent that would otherwise qualify for admissions into undergraduate programs in their countries but do not qualify for admission under the Uganda criteria. Ugandan students who have sat for the Uganda Advanced Certificate Examinations in sciences but only obtained one principle pass in a relevant subject.The programme will also target UACE holders with the subject combination in sciences who got only subsidiary passes at A-level and would like to be admitted to diploma programs in health sciences.LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, the learner should be able to;

  • Use basic mathematics and descriptive statistics to solve practical and theoretical problems in a variety of contexts.
  • Operating system fundamentals (introduction to common operating systems like Microsoft Windows, Linux, etc)
  • Apply Biological knowledge in their day to day life and have the ability to use Biological concepts to solve problems.
  • Recognize problems that can be dealt with using methods, concepts,  principles, models and theories of Chemistry.
  • Examine the art and science of written and verbal communication.

PGD in Medical EducationThe Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Education (PGDME) is a one-year competence-based programme designed to develop skills, knowledge and attitudes for effective teaching and management of health training institutions. The programme comprises modules in educational foundation general, clinical and community teaching techniques: management and entrepreneurship and professional ethics. TARGET GROUP
This program is for health professionals already teaching and those interested in teaching jobs in health training institutions. Specifically, the program is intended for a holder of:

  1. A Bachelors’ Degree in a Health-related field from a recognized higher education institution and a working experience of at least two years. And must be registered with a Professional council i.e. Nurses and Midwives, Allied Health or Medical and Dental Councils.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon completion of this program the graduates shall demonstrate ability to:

  • Teach effectively i.e. communicate effectively, develop and select teaching and learning materials and manage a class effectively.
  • Guide and supervise trainers to work in a health facility effectively i.e. provide patient care, collect, manage and interpret clinical and non-clinical data.
  • Carry out research and use new knowledge i.e. use appropriate technologies in research and teaching.
  • Manage and lead effectively a health training institution.
  • Develop and evaluate curricula: interpret and evaluate a health-training curriculum.

TEACHING METHODS

  • Practical teaching/learning including micro and peer teaching, demonstrations and return demonstration in the clinical and community settings.
  • School attachment shall provide health tutor trainees and opportunity to try out and develop their teaching skills under the guidance of their trainers.
  • Research- develops health tutor trainees’ knowledge and skills in conducting research.

 

Diploma Pharmacy

Develop a competent pharmacy professional equipped with skills knowledge, skills and attitudes for preparing quality pharmaceuticals and manage health care services while ensuring rational drug use.

At the end of this program, these pharmacy professionals should be able to among others:

  • Prepare and dispense quality pharmaceutical in a professional manner.
  • Participate in management of Health, Medicines and pharmaceutical resources.
  • Maintenance of the Pharmaceutical equipment.
  • Implement drug policies and regulations.
  • Carry out Primary Health Care activities on community drug use.
  • Conduct and participate in pharmaceutical researches.

 

Diploma Clinical Medicine

The goal of the DCM program is to prepare a multi-skilled clinical officer who will competently meet the healthcare needs of the community in all settings by providing
preventive, promotive, curative, as well as rehabilitative services to members of society. The three core competencies of this cadre include Health Services Management, Clinical practice and Community Health.LEARNING OUTCOMES
After completing the DCM program, the student is expected to carry out the following:

  • Supervision and management of staff, equipment, drugs, supplies and other assets.
  • Management of maternal and child health and reproductive health services.
  • Diagnose common disease conditions and administer appropriate treatment.
  • Carry out nursing and simple medical laboratory procedures.
  • Participate actively in the planning implementation and evaluation process of
  • Primary Health Care, community -based health care and other national programs. Provide health education to patients, special groups and the community.

TEACHING METHODS

  • Student – centred learning so as to promote full use of individual abilities.
  • Problem – based learning using small group tutorials to develop critical thinking skills.
  • Lectures to provide guidance in scope and depth to broaden students understanding.
  • Clinical demonstrations to emphasize holistic approach to patient/client care.
  • Community placements for community assessment and appropriate interventions.
  • E-Learning opportunities through online and internet-based technologies.

Bachelor Medical Lab Science (Top Up)

The goal of the Bachelor of medical laboratory science (BMLS) program is to prepare a Top-quality Medical laboratory professional who will competently meet the healthcare diagnostics and research needs of the community in all settings. This program is specifically designed for individuals who are already Diploma holders in Medical Laboratory Sciences and wish to upgrade to the Bachelors level.
